"Service: Never have this
word on your lips, but
keep it in your hearts."

ALBERT SCHWEITZER

about us

I don’t know what your destiny is, but I do know that the only ones among you who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found a way to serve.

--Albert Schweitzer

Albert Schweitzer’s example of lifelong service at the African hospital he created in Lambaréné, Gabon has inspired countless people to make service to others a centerpiece of their own lives – to, as Dr. Schweitzer encouraged, "find their own Lambaréné."

Since 1979, The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship has supported nearly 1,500 students in health-related professional fields working as Schweitzer Fellows in the U.S. and Africa, who today constitute a growing network of Schweitzer "Fellows for Life" – leaders in service who are dedicated and skilled in helping underserved communities, and whose example influences and inspires others.

On April 20-22, 2007, Global Youth Service Days, Schweitzer Fellows joined with millions of others around the world in celebrating and promoting youth service. The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship announced the next phase of expansion of its own Schweitzer Fellows Programs in the U.S. and Africa, and encouraged all participants in the April 2007 Reverence for Life, Music for Life events to join making their own commitments to foster and support lives of service, especially involving young people.
