"Joy, sorrow, tears,
lamentation, laughter - to
all these music gives
voice, but in such a way that we are transported from the world of unrest
to a world of peace,
and see reality in a new way."
ALBERT SCHWEITZER

PRELUDE: April 1-21, 2008
TUESDAY, APRIL 22: Reverence for Life, Music for Life Concerts throughout
the world
FRIDAY, APRIL 25, 2008-SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 2008 - Global Youth Service Days
POSTLUDE: April 28, 2008 onward!
Youth orchestras and other musical groups of all ages around the world, large and small, will join in creating a global celebration of music, with concerts in the Marshall Islands (site of 1950’s nuclear test explosions), Australia/New Zealand, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and across time zones through Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Europe/Africa, and North and South America.
Faced daily with the nearly-overwhelming medical and human problems at his jungle hospital, Albert Schweitzer turned to music each night, finding emotional and spiritual renewal through playing Bach on his specially-adapted piano. For Schweitzer, the combination of individuality and harmony was what made Bach’s music so glorious:
Each voice has its own will, its own personality, all are free to meet in freedom, to go their own way, to hate or to love, and in the end work together to create something that is alive because it is.
In this spirit, the global celebration of musical events throughout April 2008 will celebrate both the diversity and harmonies of the world’s musical traditions, giving voice through music of humanity’s shared yearnings for a healthy, safe, and peaceful world.
Anyone in the world can participate, individually or in groups, simply by registering a musical event as part of the global Reverence for Life, Music for Life celebration.
Musical events can be dedicated to support local, regional, or global initiatives designed to address any human or environmental problem in a spirit of Reverence for Life, or events can simply be planned as a joyful expression of the human spirit.
