"Within music is contained all
the main elements of Albert Schweitzer's life: faith,
healing, and service...Faith, healing, and service are so
much what I think a musician should strive for. Just as
the physician tries to heal the body, the musician tries to address the soul."

about us

Reverence for Life, Music for Life

Who We Are
The founders of this initiative, coordinated by The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship, include Nobel peace laureate physicians, musicians (Yo-Yo Ma and others), educators, young people, and others across the world who share Dr. Schweitzer’s faith
in the power of idealism and youth, and his belief that today’s most serious global
problems – from the dangers of nuclear weapons to degradation of the environment to
the health and poverty crises in his beloved Africa – are all symptoms of our deeper, underlying failure to nurture adequately our natural human capacity for Reverence for all Life.

We believe that music can transform the human spirit, and that young people united worldwide through music can transform our world.

Our Philosophy
This initiative is based in Dr. Schweitzer beliefs that:

  • Reverence for life provides the fundamental basis of all true ethics;
  • Service to others provides the deepest satisfaction that a human being
    can attain;
  • Individuals are the crucial source of all important change; government policies usually undergo major change when (and only when) world public opinion
    demands it;
  • Idealism of youth holds the key to the world’s future; and
  • Music has unique power to energize and renew the human spirit.
